The Many Types of Plumbing Pipes

Do you know what type of pipe material is used in your home's plumbing system? The age of your home in large part determines the materials used to manufacture your pipe system, assuming it hasn't been replaced over time.

If your home was built before 1960, you probably have pipes made of galvanized steel. During the 1960s, copper pipes began to appear because of copper's greater reliability. Polybutylene pipes gained popularity in the 1970s, although PB is considered a less reliable material than copper. Today, cross-linked polybutylene is the piping material of choice in many newly constructed homes. Inexpensive chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is also used, although this material tends to split when frozen.
